Starlink can provide backup connectivity but cannot replace submarine cables on a global scale.

When undersea cables are disrupted, the question arises whether satellite networks like Starlink can maintain internet connectivity. While Starlink offers a vital backup option, it cannot substitute the massive capacity provided by submarine cables globally. Submarine cables handle over 99% of international data traffic, offering extensive capacity at lower costs.

Satellite networks can restore essential communications, particularly in remote areas and disaster zones. However, the limited capacity of satellites compared to submarine cables means they are better suited for targeted backup rather than full-scale replacement.

According to Gulf News, a hypothetical comparison illustrates this capacity difference: a submarine cable with 20 terabits per second (Tbps) of capacity vastly outstrips a satellite link offering just 1 gigabit per second (Gbps). This highlights the challenge of using satellites as a complete alternative to undersea cables.

For the UAE and the Gulf region, maintaining robust internet infrastructure is crucial given the increasing reliance on digital services. While satellite networks can provide temporary solutions during outages, ensuring diverse and resilient cable routes remains essential for uninterrupted global connectivity.
