New feature allows users to secure private conversations, enhancing privacy controls.

OpenAI has launched a new feature for its ChatGPT platform, allowing users to lock individual chats using a four-digit PIN or biometric authentication such as Face ID. This update, announced on October 20, aims to enhance user privacy by removing locked conversations from regular chat history and search results, though they remain accessible to the user.

The feature is designed for scenarios where users may need to share their screens or devices without exposing sensitive conversations. To lock a chat, users can access the chat’s menu, select ‘Lock chat,’ and confirm their choice by entering a PIN or using device authentication. Locked chats are stored under a dedicated section and require authentication to access.

However, OpenAI warns that if a user forgets their PIN and opts to reset it, all locked chats will be permanently deleted. This measure ensures security but requires users to remember their PINs diligently. OpenAI cannot recover deleted content even if contacted for support.

The rollout of this feature is gradual, covering Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu users across various platforms including web, iOS, Android, and desktop apps for Windows and macOS. Users may need to wait for the update to reach their accounts. The introduction of this feature reflects OpenAI’s ongoing efforts to enhance privacy controls within its popular AI platform.
