The new foldable iPhone Duo, priced at Dh8499, experiences screen cracking and fingerprint sensor complaints.

Apple’s first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, launched on October 24, priced at Dh8499. However, the focus has quickly shifted from its features to user complaints about its screen durability and unlock mechanism.

The iPhone Duo has replaced Face ID with a Touch ID fingerprint reader on the side button, which has been criticized for inconsistent performance. According to PCMag, unlocking the phone often requires multiple attempts, and the button’s placement is inconvenient for left-handed users. Despite these issues, the phone received a 4.5-star rating for its hardware, performance, and battery life.

Another significant concern is the screen’s durability, with reports of cracks appearing along the hinge, a problem users have dubbed ‘Crackgate.’ The fragility of foldable screens has been a known issue, and Apple has yet to address these reports, leaving potential buyers cautious.

Looking ahead, Apple is reportedly testing prototypes of the iPhone Duo 2 with under-display Face ID, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. This feature could appear in the next one or two models, addressing the current generation’s unlock issues.

Additionally, the Duo’s camera system lacks a telephoto lens, a standard feature in Apple’s Pro models. Future iterations might include this, along with a larger main display, potentially increasing the screen size to between 8.5 and 9 inches.

While the iPhone Duo is currently the strongest foldable on the market, prospective buyers may want to wait for future models that promise to resolve these initial shortcomings.
