Personalised treatment plans highlight the importance of precise diagnosis and specialist expertise

Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi has successfully treated two patients with complex plasma cell disorders, showcasing the importance of personalised medical approaches. The cases involved a 53-year-old woman with high-risk multiple myeloma and a 42-year-old man diagnosed with POEMS syndrome, a rare plasma cell disorder. The clinic’s efforts underscore the need for precise diagnosis and individualised treatment strategies.

The first patient, diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2018, faced a challenging journey as her condition progressed despite undergoing various advanced treatments, including stem cell transplants and chemotherapy. Her treatment was adjusted to include medicines she had not previously received, resulting in a reduction of myeloma-associated masses and improved clinical outcomes.

The second patient experienced symptoms initially attributed to a neurological condition. Further evaluation revealed POEMS syndrome, characterised by symptoms such as polyneuropathy and organ enlargement. Dr. Ajlan Al Zaki, a hematology specialist at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, emphasised the importance of understanding the disease’s biology and tailoring treatment to each patient’s unique clinical picture.

Dr. Al Zaki likened treatment planning for multiple myeloma to a strategic game of chess, where the timing and sequence of therapies are crucial. He also highlighted the need for early diagnosis in rare conditions like POEMS syndrome to ensure appropriate treatment.
