Authorities in the UAE have announced the closure of more than 35 beaches across Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, and Umm Al Quwain due to an oil spill and ongoing maintenance work. The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment confirmed the oil spill on October 23, following reports of unexplained odours in Sharjah, Ajman, and Umm Al Quwain, which it stated pose no health risks.
In Umm Al Quwain, all beaches and coastal areas have been closed temporarily as a precautionary measure while technical teams conduct assessments and cleanup operations. The Sharjah Government Media Bureau also announced the closure of Al Hamriyah Beach to prevent pollution from reaching it.
On October 24, the Ras Al Khaimah Public Services Department, in coordination with the Ras Al Khaimah Police General Headquarters, closed all public beaches across the emirate until further notice to ensure public safety. Residents and visitors have been urged to avoid coastal areas.
Dibba Al Hisn Beach in Sharjah was closed on October 27 for maintenance and improvement works, with no official link to the oil spill. Beach access at hotels and resorts in Umm Al Quwain and Ras Al Khaimah has also been restricted, with swimming prohibited.
No reopening dates have been announced for the affected areas, and residents are advised to stay informed through official channels for updates.
